Scandi-Industrial: When Scandinavian Interior Design Can be Dark

Have you ever wondered how dark Scandinavian interior design would be? And can it be combined with another style, for example, an industrial style? There is a big difference between the clean Scandinavian style and the darker and more industrial design. But the thing is, a lot of people seem to confuse these two styles, and they doubt that both styles can be mixed beautifully. When you search ‘Scandinavian Interior Design’ one the internet, you will probably find a bunch of pictures of rooms painted in white and wood flooring. Even though you can mix black and white when designing Scandinavian interiors, you’ll still find a lot of Scandinavian styles are coloured in white or any lighter colours. However, Scandinavian design doesn’t always have to be white. It can have a beautiful and charming dark tone if you smartly combine the black and white or cleverly blend it with industrial style. In this article, I’m going to give you a brief explanation about Scandinavian and Industrial styles and how to incorporate them to create a beautiful interior. If you’re thinking about applying a Scandinavian Industrial style to your home, then read on…

Scandinavian Style

Scandinavian design is an interior design that’s influenced by homes settled in Scandinavian countries such as Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. It is considered as a popular design choice for many interior designers and homeowners. As it’s a famous style, you can find Scandinavian interior design not only in Scandinavian countries, but also other countries around the world. The famous Scandinavian design is all about simplicity, minimalism and functionality. This minimalist approach to design can be easily adapted to any interior design style.

Industrial Style

Industrial style takes a page from the need to convert old factories, warehouses, farmhouses, and other industrial spaces into living places. It’s a timeless design that’s characterised by simplicity and minimalism, dark and neutral colours, high ceiling, and mechanical elements such as exposed pipes or brick walls, and swivelling floor lighting, giving the impression of unfinished space. It provides a casual atmosphere that’s relaxing to live in.

Scandi-Industrial Style

A Scandi-Industrial style is basically born from the blending of Scandinavian design and industrial design.  It is very similar to Scandinavian design, but it has some commonalities with industrial design. They work so well separately, but also can blend beautifully. You can apply this style in your bedroom, living room, dining room, and even kitchen. Since they have some things in common (tones, textures, functionality), combining them together will give your home interior a unique and pleasing look.

Incorporate Scandi-Industrial Design

If you want to combine Scandinavian and industrial styles in your room, you need to determine which style is dominant and which style is supporting. A 50:50 ratio will be confusing because these two styles have some similarities. However, because of those similarities, they are easy to blend. If you want to have Scandinavian design as the dominant, you can combine its furniture with a white brick wall and add some industrial lighting fixtures. However, if you want the industrial side as the dominant, don’t be too focused on natural elements such as wood floors. Instead, pay more attention to mixing black and white. Mixing white wall with any black accent (lighting fixtures, picture frames, sofas) will give your house a Scandi-Industrial look. You can aim a masculine feel to your living space by choosing dark and earthy colours. For example, use white for your walls and contradict it with wood flooring and dark-coloured furnishings such as cabinets, tables, sofas, and curtains.  You can also give your home an industrial look but at the same time still maintain the Scandinavian style elements by painting your room with white brick walls, and use dark iron material for your doors and windows, and exposed concrete flooring with rustic coating. Everything depends on which style you choose to be dominant. A Scandi-Industrial style is an outstanding way to combine your favourite elements from both designs into your creation to make a unique, elegant, pleasing, and relaxing living space. As both styles are amazing in their own ways, blending them together in smart ways will give your eyes the satisfaction of an extraordinary look of your home.
